The syllabus for Maltese as a foreign language consists of and gives the same importance to the four main skills of the language, meaning listening, speaking, reading and writing, as well as other aspects which help in integration, such as literature, which in itself introduces the candidates to cultural aspects which they will be encountering in the country in their everyday life.

The study area SEC Maltese as a Foreign Language is informed by the National Curriculum Framework (NCF).
The assessing of skills, achievements and all criteria of this syllabus must be done on the following themes: The weather, The months and the seasons, The food, The family, The clothes (The parts of the body), The animals, The house, the street and where I live, Traveling, Interesting places in Malta, At the restaurant/At the airport/At the post office etc., The hobbies/The sports, The Maltese culture (food, feasts, traditions, habits), The Maltese countryside, The books, the reading and the library, The means of transport, The technology.
This program also includes achievements of learning related to broad curricular themes, meaning digital literacy skills; diversity; creativity and innovation and entrepreneurship; sustainable development and learning and cooperative literacy. With this method, the candidates can achieve as a whole skills, knowledge, attitude and values required to advance in their studies, in the workplace, in their life and in their citizenship.
