Music Primary level

The study area Primary Level Music is informed by the National Curriculum Framework (NCF).

Music as a universal mode of expression propels the students to develop further their instrumental/vocal skills and ensemble playing. This course incorporates a variety of strands related to music learning – listening and responding, performing and composing. Music education can act as a springboard for students to further develop skills in confidence, personality and presentation. Music learning widens the students’ cultural horizons both in Malta and globally, the cultural sector offers a variety of areas of interest that can lead to various possible openings.

At the end of the programme, the student will be able to: 

• identify instruments that belong to specific time periods and use this information to justify one’s reasoning for suggesting when a piece of music was composed
• identify some musical elements that belong to certain styles of music and use this information to classify the piece of music according to type (e.g. musical, opera, ballad)
• understand the music was composed using the resources available at the time
• respond to music through movement and suggest ways how movements can represent the music
• discuss how a composer has used different resources to create different moods and effects
• identify some instruments/voices used in a piece of music and comment on how they are utilised
• identify how a composer uses musical elements in his work – melody, harmony, rhythm, texture, structure and expression
• perform simple pieces from memory and from notation
• move beyond the basic technical aspects of the music and perform expressively, thus performing with accurate rhythm and pitch as well as conveying the music through appropriate dynamics, technique and tone
• perform in front of different contexts including class peers or an audience of parents
• sing simple songs in unison, in rounds and in two-part harmony
• follow a conductor and enjoy playing in an ensemble
• play a wide range of percussion instruments
• perform following conventional notation
• explore software that enables me to create accompaniments to songs using pre-existing samples
