Maltese O'level

The study area SEC Maltese is informed by the National Curriculum Framework (NCF).

Maltese, our national language, is one of the core subjects, essential in our education system. Maltese is a way of communication and interaction which embraces in itself one community with diverse realities, and holds within it a linguistic and cultural identity whom the Maltese people have shaped and continue to shape over the ages. With the Maltese language, students continue to widen their personal development within the scholastic experience, as both an individual, as well as a Maltese and European citizen. Thanks to the Maltese language, students will continue to develop their skills and competence, and hence become more prepared for different job opportunities. The methodology that must be used in learning in the learning objectives of this syllabus is that I learn by doing and actively participating.

This syllabus aims to instill and develop awareness, skills, areas, competences and attitudes in all students by the end of their compulsory education. The main achievements of this syllabus are linked to the development of the language.

At the end of the programme, the student will be able to:

• Speak with precision according to the context and the audience.
• Listen to texts on subjects, according to different contexts and situations
• Understand the meaning of words found in reading texts
• Understand the structure, the organization and the different techniques used by writers to write genres of writing
• Understand the function of reading texts according to the purpose and the audience for whom they are written
• Write one’s own essays
• Use writing to reach various communicative functions
• Use good Maltese to write different genres for audience and with different purposes
• Use grammatical category to work with the written language
• Identify different literary genres
• Appreciate the use of themes in literary texts
• Comment critically about literary texts 
• Analyze the styles that make up literary texts
• Appreciate the poem of our national poet, Dun Karm Psaila
