We’re approaching that time of the year again, and you either love it or hate it: summer is right around the corner, and kids will soon be returning or shelving their books and starting their summer holidays. Although a break is well-deserved, many parents will rightfully be concerned about their kids’ academic progress – and this is where summer revision or catch-up lessons may come in.
For those students who don’t obtain the desired grades in their annuals, or those who aim to excel in the coming year, summer catch-up lessons can provide a good academic boost – and can easily fit into one’s summer schedule.
What do summer catch-up lessons cover?
Summer catch-up lessons in Malta usually cover the syllabus from the previous scholastic year, to help students improve on any topics that they struggled with and increase their proficiency in the subject. Revision lessons can provide a good boost for students who didn’t obtain the desired grades in a specific subject, to make sure they catch-up in time for the next scholastic year. During these revision lessons, tutors cover key topics that tend to come up in exams, go over past papers, and focus on a few topics that students find particularly challenging.
The advantages of taking summer revision lessons
Private revision lessons can provide just the right balance between real fun and tangible academic progress. With Malta being such a small island, joining an in-person group can be very convenient: parents can send their kids to a couple of lessons in the morning during working hours, and still have plenty of time to enjoy a barbecue on the beach that same evening!
But can a student really progress academically in just a couple of hours a week? Let’s look at a couple of facts based on our experience in past years:
- A small classroom setting can provide the ideal environment for a student to get more individualised attention, in comparison to the traditional school setting. Children tend to focus more as part of a small group, and with just a couple of hours a week they have fewer opportunities to get distracted.
- These lessons can be more fun and engaging – given the small group setting, tutors will have more opportunities to prepare interactive activities and games. This makes summer revision lessons slightly different — and definitely more exciting — compared to the typical lessons one has at school.
- It’s an opportunity to revise past papers. Especially once results are out, tutors can focus on the students’ individual challenges and go over past paper questions in more detail.
- It avoids the ‘summer slide’ – students tend to forget what they covered as the summer progresses. Summer revision lessons can help provide the right amount of practice and stimulation for their brains, and prevent them from losing touch with what they learnt during the previous year.
- They’re a good opportunity to socialise and make new friends – last but not least, in-person revision lessons in Malta can help students form new friendships with students of the same age, and can serve to overcome the isolation that may arise if they spend too much time at home.
